Technology is redefining how cities manage transportation, and airports are no exception. At LAX, one of the world’s busiest airports, the demand for smarter, more responsive transit led the City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) to partner with CharterUP on a modern mobility solution.
More than 200,000 passengers move through LAX daily, putting enormous strain on airport infrastructure and vital connection points. As one of the world’s busiest airports, LAX posed a pressing challenge for the City of Los Angeles and LAWA: how to ease congestion in the Central Terminal Area.
By combining CharterUP’s innovative technology with a proven track record across Southern California, the FlyAway program has been modernized, reducing congestion and reimagining intra-airport transit.
CharterUP’s Tech-Enabled Approach
CharterUP is collaborating with LAWA to create a seamless, tech-driven shuttle operation for the LAX FlyAway program. The shuttle service will consist of 27 vehicles providing nonstop loops, seven days a week, between each terminal at LAX, Van Nuys Airport and Los Angeles Union Station.

- Real-Time Technology: CharterUP will manage a proprietary platform including a mobile app and web portal with live shuttle tracking and alerts.
- Tailored and Adaptive Fleet: The adaptive fleet includes ADA-compliant and electric vehicles which have the ability to scale up and down to match ridership volume on the busiest travel days.
- Scalable Solutions: CharterUP will ensure operations meet daily and emergency transportation demands, with real-time adaptability for passenger surges, traffic changes, or schedule disruptions.
- Seamless Booking & Payment: Instant booking via app, web portal, or in-bus tap-to-pay provides passengers with extreme convenience.
- Affordability: Subsidized operations by the City of Los Angeles allow for nominal rider fares, increasing accessibility and reducing traffic for all.
Impact on Traffic
Last year alone, the LAX FlyAway program served more than 1.9 million passengers, preventing an estimated 1.45 million vehicle trips into the central terminal area. This new multi-year contract with CharterUP will be managed with an increased focus on efficiency, service quality and affordability to lessen traffic congestion and encourage wider public adoption.
