World Cup Travel Surge: What it Means for Group Transportation in the U.S.

Published March 30, 2026

The countdown to the World Cup is underway, and the travel demand across the United States is already shifting. Months ahead of the June 11 kickoff, host cities and surrounding regions are seeing rising demand for transportation, lodging, and coordinated shuttles. For organizers, understanding these dynamics will be key to delivering a smooth experience.

CharterUP is tracking these trends in real time. As the nation’s largest unified group transportation platform, we’re seeing how World Cup momentum is translating into increased demand across key markets, and what it means for the summer ahead.

The Surge in Demand is Already Underway

Industry forecasts point to a sustained rise in travel tied to major global sporting events. The World Cup is expected to drive increased travel across host cities, with ripple effects extending into nearby markets as teams, fans, sponsors, media, and staff move between matches and events.

This tournament carries added weight. It marks the first World Cup in the United States in more than 30 years and introduces an expanded format with more teams and matches. More matches means more team, fan and media travel, more corporate hospitality, more brand activations, and thus, an increase in demand for quality transportation providers. Each of these movements depends on coordinated, reliable transportation, one of the most critical and complex elements of executing a global event at this scale.

CharterUP’s 2026 World Cup Booking Trends (June 1 – July 31, YoY 2025 vs 2026)

  • Confirmed bookings across host markets is up ~103% YoY: Boston (+156%), Toronto (+170%), and Philadelphia (+34%) are among the markets seeing the strongest individual growth. This spike is on roughly the same number of trips, meaning average deal sizes have increased
  • Houston, We Have Liftoff: Houston is the single biggest market-mover.  Bookings in Houston during this period are up 190% YoY.
  • New York/New Jersey and Los Angeles Lead the Way: As expected, the largest host markets— New York/New Jersey and Los Angeles—continue to generate the highest volume of bookings, with steady demand levels rather than sharp spikes.
  • Total platform activity across all host markets is up ~70% YoY:  Inbound inquiries climbed ~50%, to nearly 2,400 records.

These insights reinforce one clear takeaway: the demand is here. Organizations that secure transportation early will have the greatest flexibility and control.

The U.S. Infrastructure Reality: A Different World Cup Experience

For many international visitors, attending a World Cup in the United States will feel very different from past tournaments in Europe and South America.

In many global host cities, stadiums sit within dense urban centers and are easily connected by rail and public transit. Fans can step off a train and walk directly to the venue. That level of connectivity does not exist across much of the U.S.

Many American stadiums are located outside city centers, often in suburban or car-dependent areas with limited public transportation. This creates a transportation gap that organizers, brands, and traveling supporters must plan for.

Consider a few examples:

  • Boston: Gillette Stadium in Foxborough sits roughly 30 miles from downtown with limited direct rail access and heavy reliance on highways.
  • Dallas: AT&T Stadium in Arlington is positioned between Dallas and Fort Worth and is not connected to major rail networks.
  • Los Angeles: SoFi Stadium is far outside the many visitor hubs and dependent on road-based transportation.
  • San Francisco Bay Area: Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara sits well outside San Francisco’s urban district and requires coordinated travel.

For international fans used to urban convenience, this geographic reality will come as a surprise. It also underscores the need for coordinated group transportation to the infrastructure gap between airports, hotels, fan zones, and match venues.
